According to Jame Mundy Emmett her grandmother's name was Betty Compton/Crumpton and her family originated in Ireland. In 1860 living next door to JB Munday was E. Crumpton F. age 41 born in South Carolina listed as Insane and H. A. Crumpton F 36 born in Georgia. In 1870 Elizabeth and Amanda Compton are living in the household of Butler White who in 1860 was living on the other side of the Crumpton household. Butler White is the father of Lucinda and Garrison White who married Zachariah and Georgia Ann. It is possible that Butler's wife Nancy who was also born in South Carolina was a Crumpton/Compton and that Aunt Jane confused her grandmother for her step-grandmother (Lucinda White Mundy's mother.) In the 1850 Census John and M.E. were living next door to Joseph Compton age 69 from Virginia. Joseph's family included M. 49 F SC; E. 19 F GA; H W 15 M GA; M J 11 M GA; N M 6 F GA . On the other side of John was Carlisle Crowe and on his other side was Butler White. On the other side of Butler White was Sara East 45 Widow from SC with Elizabeth Compton 32 SC and Hannah Compton 21 SC. In the 1840 Census Joseph Compton is listed with several other Comptons; John Compton, Micajah Compton, Nathan Compton, W E Compton.. It seems that the wife listed with him in the 1850 census is a second wife as there is 20 years difference in their ages and the children seem to comprise two families. I think that the young Compton men listed in the 1840 census are Joseph's sons by his first wife and that Nancy White and Sarah East, Hannah (also known as Amanda or H.A.) and Elizabeth are his daughters by the first wife also. It is possible that Joseph may be the same Joseph who was the son of Quakers Samuel and Elizabeth Compton who were originally from Botetourt County, Virginia and then moved to South Carolina where they were part of the Newberry Congregation. That Joseph's bith was recorded in a family bible as being 8 June 1782, which fits with the calculated age from the census records. More research is needed to prove or disprove a connection to this family.
Zachariah's mother however was Mary Eveline Thornton daughter of Thomas Thornton and Rebecca House. Interestingly Thomas Thornton is listed as living next door to Joseph Compton in the 1840 census, and his family was in Spartansburg, SC with the Compton's prior to coming to Georgia. His family before that was from Louisa County, Virginia where John Munday and his wife Elizabeth Burruss came from. In 1867 Thomas Thornton gave a deed of gift of 100 acres to Zachariah, Georgia Ann and Nebraska. He named Zachariah, Georgia Ann and Nebraska as grandchildren in his will and according to other family researchers the distribution of his estate took place at Zachariah's home. She is listed as having an unknown female child by the Thornton family. I suspect that she died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. She died sometime after 1855 when Nebraska was born and before 9 Aug 1860 when the census was taken, and given that JB remarried on 25 Nov 1860 I would say that she most likely had died by 1859 at the latest. I still need to get copies of the original probate records for Thomas Thornton. At least one researcher has an additional unknown daughter born between 1856/1859 however I have yet to see any records to fubstantiate this. It is possible that there was another child which died in childbirth and it may be that Mary Eveline died during this event as well.
